Tan Sri Rainer Althoff

It took me a while to realize the dimension of the most recent natural disaster in Japan. So many victims…. on such a small space of land. One of my friends triggered my mind as a Rotarian: We are here to serve above self, we will do our very best for the victims in Japan especially in the area of Sendai.

Very quickly a group of volunteers at the grassroots, corporate organizations and my fellow Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur DiRaja responded in rolling out our famous Rotary network of helping hands all over Malaysia. And the opportunity to help is so practical – to collect and dispatch blankets to disaster-hit relief centers in Japan.

It is now wintertime in Japan and many centers are short of blankets. The homeless are freezing and suffering from the need of warmth and bed covering, especially at night. Children are shivering and are the hardest hit among those who are housed in those disaster relief centers.
Malaysians are being invited to help by donating blankets. Even one blanket from each family in Malaysia will be able to collectively fill a plane. The minimum target we hope is 1000 blankets that will save 1000 lives in Japan.

The most needed feeling of these victims, elderly people and poor kids is warmth. I sincerely believe that the efforts of 1-Blanket 4-Japan will give many of them not only a warmer heart during the cold wintertime in Japan. It will help many of them to survive – One Blanket … One Survivor.
